31 March 04: A Roadmap for SPCC

A talk and discussion with Principal Poon Chun Kau was held at the School Hall Gallery on 31 March 2004. Perry Yu Pak Le met Alexander Chu Ren Yee, Wandy Kwok Man Yee and Phyllis Lau Suk Wan, among many other alumni from different classes. Principal Poon gave a synopsis on the changes that have been instituted at SPCC since he came to SPCC in 1999 and oversaw the conversion of the school to a direct subsidy scheme school. More resources and freedom to move into new directions have resulted in new curriculum, new student activities (e.g. SPCC Student Union with all student-elected office bearers), new infrastructure (new primary school site in Wong Chuk Hang and expansion of the secondary school), new emphasis on student community service as an integral part of education, new exchanges with overseas high schools (e.g. in Singapore and Beijing), new all-Putonghua teaching in Chinese subjects from Form 3 on, new flexibility in choosing students and granting financial support. These changes have been much to Principal Poon's satisfaction but by no means completed. Listening to his talk, I had an impression of a different school and a rapidly evolving one from what was relatively stable and perrenial in our days. Due to retire soon, Principal Poon summarized what he observed as the SPCC spirit over the years, presented his roadmap for SPCC and invited comments and feedbacks from all alumni attending his talk (see A Roadmap for SPCC?). The event was organized by the SPCC Alumni Association which also introduced its new Executive Committee.

The SPCC College Council also introduced Dr Anissa Chan Wong Lai-kuen (³¯¶ÀÄR®S³Õ¤h) as the new Principal effective September 2004 at a press conference the previous day. (See also press release.) This kind of publicity, or shall we say transparency, was indeed something different from our days. As we know, education reform has been on in Hong Kong for a number of years and has met with no small amount of debate and controversy. Classmates who want to catch up with the reform proposal can visit the home page of the Education Commission. Dr Chan has been a member of the Education Commission since June 2003.s

12 March 04: Eatwell and Be Well

For our class, 2004 has opened with a healthy note. Many of us must have made our new year resolution to stay healthy and so responded quickly to sign up for a health talk get-together at the Eatwell Shop in Causeway Bay on 10 January.

Who were the speakers? You guess it - speakers were from among our own classmates. No holds barred. Open and frank dialog. Ask the questions you've always wanted but afraid to ask. Jennie Ng Ching Wah, Tai Yau Ting, and Robert Li Mow Wing spoke in turn and answered questions on menopause, osteoporosis, calcium and diet, cardiovascular diseases and risks, the use of radiology for screening, diagnosis and therapy.

Jenny Ng Ching Wah gives her Powerpoint show-and-tell while Tai Yau Ting inspects the dinner menu,...

... and Robert Li Mow Wing is not joking this time.

The captive audience included Chan Man Wai, Chang Tai Wai David, Choi Suk Wai Josephine, Chow Wan Kin Ernest and wife Cindy, Fok Miu Yee Stella, Fong Man Fu Eric, Fong Wai Man Vivien, Hu Kwang Huei Marian, Lai Kar Nin Ross, Lee Yee Nin, Luk Wing Yan Winnie, Ma King Huen Philip, Mok Ngai Ming and wife Julia and daughter Vivienne, Ng Wai Yuen Wendy, Tang Lai Ying Diana and Wong Kwong Hoi David, To Kim Lai Kinny, Wong Kwok Yee Michael, Yeung Kin Sie Denise, and Yu Pak Le Perry. Many of us were rare faces showing up for the first time in years. So the evening was part scare and alert (on hearing health tips and warnings), and a much larger part fun and joy (on seeing old classmates and indulging in yummy though not necessarily healthy foods)!

And as they say, birds of the same feather flock together - David Chang, Ross Lai, and Perry Yu put their learning into action right away and went up the Peak at 7 am the next morning and jogged - for health, and for the upcoming Standard Chartered Marathon on 8 February. As it turned out, David had not run for at least a year, Perry had never run a 10 km - the shortest distance in the Marathon events, and Ross did not enrol in time to officially run in the Marathon. Finally, on Marathon day, Perry only ran at the Peak for 3.3 km. David, as one representing lead sponsor Standard Chartered Bank, ran a 1:13:42 10 km. Ross ran a half-marathon along with the crowd but without an official time. Ross, the veteran runner of the three, thought people who do marathons have a positive attitude towards life. Believe it or not, that's sufficient motivation for Perry and David to say they will seriously run - and for longer distances - next year. We'll watch and see.

Earlier in December 2003, Lyn Chan Bic Lyn and daughter Katherine from California, Peggy Lee Shun Kam and husband Joseph and her two sons Adrian and Jonathan from Yokohama, and Tony Chu Tung Nang from New York visited Hong Kong for the holidays and met a whole bunch of classmates and family members at a Boxing Day party held at the Eatwell Shop in Causeway Bay: Angela Chan Wai Shan, Josephine Choi Suk Wai, Marian Hu Kwang Huei and Alfred Tsang Chee Ching and sons Bryan and Justin, David Lai Kwok Ngor and his youngest son Woofe, Esther Lau Ying Wah, Winnie Luk Wing Yan and husband George and son Christopher, Helen Ma Kam Fong and husband Paul and twin sons Michael and Matthew, Wendy Ng Wai Yuen, Angela Tung Suk Ming and daughter Valerie, Stella Fok Miu Yee with son Chi Yin and niece Stephanie, Perry Yu Pak Le and wife Shuen Shuen and daughter Ariel. The small eating place was crowded and festivities abounded as birthday boys and girls (from two generations) celebrate their December birthdays together.

Ronnie Tong Leung Nei who spearheaded our classmates' 30th Reunion in Australia last December sent in a note saying Lau Ping Hong has successfully tracked down Raymond Mak Wai Man. Raymond is also in Sydney but has changed his email. Ronnie said he'll organize the next gathering to make sure Raymond and William Chen Wai Lim, who was out of town last December, will not miss out. Ronnie also filled us in with a long forgotten anecdote from our school days:

"Draw, label, identify and comment", it is the "standard" phrase used by Mr. Siu Chi Yuen during his biology practical lessons (and hence the Chiu Chow accent) - we were (then) required to identify the biological specimen provided, draw and label the various identified parts of the specimen and made relevant comments on the observations. I just borrowed this phrase to see if you guys could identify the Aussie bunch of SPCC 73.
