Hi, Keypals!

Steven Miller from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada says:

Hello there. I enjoyed your page although I only get to see it in
a text format. I especially liked the bit about Pingu. He is my
favorite penguin too. Is Pingu popular where you live? He is known
here a bit, but not famous. I like all of the Pingu episodes that I
have seen, especially the ones where Pingu is misbehaving.

I'm 3 years old too (mommy is helping me write this) I like your page very
much, especially the Thomas page. I have a link to your Thomas page on
my home page.... My page doesn't have as much as yours does,
but you can see my picture and links to my favorite places on the net.
(Mommy says that your page has inspired her to do more with mine.)

Congratulations for being the first visitor to find the bug! I'll mention
this in my drawings page and will also put a link to your home page.
I visited your home page already and was delighted that you like
Ariel the Mermaid too. I love the big zoom in effect and the nice drawings
of you by your Mummy. I also play on Daddy's computer as you do.
My Dad's computer is also a Macintosh.

Meghan Kim Overbury from Montreal, Quebec, Canada says:

    Hi Kaitong,

There's been some trouble with the email lately, so if you sent any
to "rosso@sceast.cn.ca" they might not get here. Send your letters to
    "rosso@cn.ca".

I went to Upper Canada Village. It's a place where you go and have fun. It's
like a fun park. No one in your country knows what it is. My Dad's writing
this now. It's in Ontario, and we live in Quebec. We had to drive for a
long time to get there. It is a town where you venture around and see how
things were a long time ago. All the buildings are real old buildings from
pioneer times that were moved to the park. My favourite thing was milking
a cow! The people were dressed like they were a long time ago, in the time
of pioneers. It's fun, fun, fun there. Some kids stay there all day and
night for a week. It's like they're living in the past.

(Meghan is writing the next few lines all by herself. Dad's
    transcription follows:)

i went to the boatacal gardins it was fun evryone was there its in
downtown we took my grandmother with us we went on a tuor for a hole hower
and a haf there was a fun insetareim and butrfliy tent and live bees
gouing in and out of the hive.

I went to la ronde. its a fun park. i went on a inside rolercoster called
    the dragon and the ufo.

[ I went to the Botanical gardens. It was fun. Everyone was there. It's
in downtown. We took my grandmother with us. We went on a tour for a
whole hour and a half. There was a fun insectarium and butterfly tent
and live bees going in and out of the hive.

I went to La Ronde. It's a fun park. I went on an inside
rollercoaster called the dragon and on the UFO. ]

(Now Dad's writing my words again)

The UFO is a ride where all the people sit in seats on a wall on the edge
of a wheel. The wheel turns around and when it turns, the seats slide up
and down. My sister only went on the little kids' rides.

I had the flu. Everyone in my house had it expect my dad and my baby sister.
I got it after my sister and my mom.

I took swimming lessons again this year. I was in the yellow group and I
finished it. Then I went to the orange group and I finished it this summer.
I finished red, too! I love swimming lessons, and I think it's almost the
    best thing.

Last year I finished kindergarten. Now I'm in grade 1. I do all sorts of
things; so much I can't even tell you all of them. I'll tell you a few,
though. We do arts and crafts, earn stickers when we get enough "jetons"
(tokens). We get "jetons" whenever we do a good thing. I like my teacher.
Her name is Annick. I have some friends that were in my kindergarten class.
I can tell you their names. Their names are Trevor, Vannessa, Lisa, Thomas,
Kendra, and my new friends are Matthew, Michael, Jade, Andrea, Natisha,
    Natalie, Julianna and Julie.

Did you start school yet? Do you have a nice teacher? What's your teacher's
    name?

Please write back soon, even if it's just to let me know you got my letter.
I'll write a short note right away as soon as I get your answer, so we know
the mail is getting through again.

    Your Canadian friend,
    Meghan Kim Overbury

I have a map to record where messages and visitors have come from
(at the very bottom of my Message Book page where it says Visitors'
Trivia) - a way to learn my geography I suppose.

Can you suggest some interesting home pages in Natal or elsewhere in

P.S. Do you know S Africa has lately become a hot vacation destination

Meghan Kim Overbury from Montreal, Quebec, Canada says:

    Hi, Kaitong!

Would you like to be my new friend? I found your name on KidsCom.

I'm 6 1/2 years old. My name is Meghan Kim Overbury. I'm a girl.
I have 3 keypals already, but I'm planning on having a hundred! I have
a sister and her name is Shauna and I also have a baby sister. I think
they're cute. I like them. I never heard the name Kaitong before! Did
you ever hear the name Meghan before? My sister named Shauna is 4
years old and the baby is 6 months old.

I live in Montreal, Canada. There's lots of people from Hong Kong
living in Canada. My uncle was married to someone from Hong Kong.
Her name is Sin Wan Fong. My dad's helping me with this letter,
but I can read and write very well.

I'm starting grade 1 in the fall. I was in Kindergarten last year.
I'm in French Immersion. That means most of our lessons are in French.
My sister goes to pre-school and they do most things in English. I have all
sorts of friends in school, and I'm probably going to meet new ones!
I like it in school. It's fun. I think it's the best thing to do,
except when it gets boring, like when you're in grade 4 and it gets
    really hard.

Kaitong, do you have a sister or a brother? I don't have any
brothers, only sisters. Two sisters and me -- that's all the kids in
    my house.

I'm going to write by myself now ...

i have a wold globe. it shows me were you live. its far away

far away from you. dads playing yore the cutst litele baby i now

    bie for now .

A note from Meghan's dad: I'll translate the above paragraph if you
have problems intrepreting Meghan's intuitive spelling. I added only
punctuation. She really does love to write! The rest of the letter is
in Meghan's words; she dictates and I write what she says. Meghan enjoys
writing her keypals and would be glad to have Kaitong join the fun.
Please write back if you're interested.

and videos. My newest videos are Barney and Old MacDonald Had a Farm
Sing-A-Long. I like Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine and Flintstone

I am going to school in September, so I won't have as much time to watch TV
and videos. My newest videos are Barney and Old MacDonald Had a Farm
Sing-A-Long. I like Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine and Flintstone
very much. What are your favorite shows?

    See you later.

I was quite surprised! A good surprise, of course!
I was browsing the net, other day, when I saw your home page. You are very

I am going to sent you the guidelines to become [a member of] ... Kidlink.
Actually, we are with a project named "Virtual transactions". The kids
are exchanging mails, trying to spend $100. It's been vey funny.
Maybe you can join us. I live in Rio de Janeiro, it's winter by now
but our winter is very good. We don't have snow and we go to the beach.
That's winter? It's because Brazil is a tropical country.
Our flag is green, yellow, blue and white. Saying like that it looks
horrible but it is beautiful, jolly, with some stars also.
I hope to hear from you but I am going to bed now. It's too late (3.55 am -
July 16). I think you just woke up. You can look at the map and see why we
    have this difference.

Ariel replies to Cassandra of Vancouver, BC, Canada:

Hong Kong people love to shop too.... Hong Kong used to be
called the Shoppers' Paradise. It's no longer true. Things are all very
expensive here now. More than they are in Canada, I'm sure.

It's hot and humid here even though it's not into the middle of the summer
yet. When it's summer, it's less humid, and we love to go to the beach.

I don't know how to swim yet. I play in paddle pools at home, and always
made the floor wet. I love it and always make my finger tips all wrinkled
before I get out of the water....

    We don't have [McDonald's] drive-throughs in Hong Kong. I think that's
cool without having to get out of your car. Maybe they can start a home
delivery service with ordering through email one day. That will be really cool
without even having to change and get into the car. My hamburger will
arrive when I finish writing my letter to you! Don't you agree?

I forget to mention ice cream as my favorite last time. I like chocolate,
strawberry. But I don't like the chocolate making my teeth look brown. I
always have to brush my teeth after having chocolate ice cream. And I
don't take anything sweet after my supper 'cause I don't want to get bad
    teeth....

No, I don't have a Barbie. But I have a cute little doll named Banana
Pyjama. Dad says it's from Australia. I like to dress and undress him.
(Yes, it's a he. Dolls can be boys too, right?). I have many stuffed
animals, a few teddy bears, doggies and rabbits, and also the less
commonly seen ones like the Koala, Thick-Lip Fish, Baby Dinosaur, Piggy,
Moo Moo Cow, E.T., Mr. Sun (a big Sunflower) - well, not exactly an
animal, and Snoopy and Minnie Mouse. I like my puppets Crocodile, Monkey,
Parrot and the Frog. I like toy cars and tricycles, Lego, blocks, cooking
sets, playing cards, word cards, puzzles. My car is pink and my tricycle
is blue. What colours are yours?

I was very happy to receive your letter. It is really nice to learn
about different places in the world. Hong Kong sounds
like a very nice place to live. Here in Vancouver we have a lot of
mountains and large forests. We have many highrises and tons of
shopping centers, people here love to shop.

Now that it is spring the weather is very nice. Although we have a
great deal of rain the average temperature is about
20 degrees celcius. What is the weather like there?

I also will be starting school in September.I am looking forward to it.
I think the best part of Vancouver is the ocean our city lies right beside
it. The ocean water is very warm in the summer and lots of fun to swim
in. Do you know how to swim?

I too love Mcdonalds french fries and hamburgers. We often go through the
drive through window and bring our Mcdonalds food home to eat. My favorite
foods are mainly pasta ie.spaghetti. And for a treat I love ice cream.

I have a lot of toys to play with - my favorite is my Barbies.Do you have a
Barbie doll? Or what other toys do you like to play with?...

We have a harbour and many islands. I live on one of these islands where
there is a mountain peak of height 1000 meters overlooking the harbour.
At night, all the lights in the high rise apartment buildings give a very pretty
    scenery from the peak.

We have 6 million people here and most of us are Chinese. Like other big
cities in the world, Hong Kong is modern, westernized, and convenient. I
like to go to McDonald's for French Fries and hamburgers. But my
favorite foods are still typically Chinese - rice, tofu, fish, pork,
Chinese greens like bok choi and choi sum. What's your favorite?...

Ariel replies to Jessica and Katie from USA:

    Hi Jessica and Katie,

    Thank you for your email.

I am Kaitong Ariel Yu, or you can just call me Ariel, from Hong Kong. I'm
only 2 years 10 months old, so my dad is helping me to answer your mail.

Where is your home town and state in the US?

Mom and Dad helped build my home page, and I made recordings on songs I
know. I also drew some pictures for everyone to see.

Are you setting up your home page now? Do you do it at home or at school?

I got many messages from friends all over, all of them older than I. Mom
will put on some of these messages to share with my friends visiting me.
Some of them are building their home pages or have them done already.

I'll also put on a list of my favorite cartoons and movies on my page
    soon. Check it out later....

Ariel replies to Molly from Mississippi, USA:

    Hi Molly,

Thank you for your lettter. You see, I'm still very young, and my
parents are helping me to answer your mail....

I like gymnastics too. But I can only do tumbling right
now. I was born in Hong Kong and I live in Hong Kong. I like dogs but I
don't have one. In Hong Kong, it's very crowded. People mostly live in
high rise apartments. Ours is 12-storey high and it's not the best place
for keeping dogs. They won't have a place to run around.

I like Chinese food, and chicken wings and rice and celery very much. I
also like bread, spaghetti, French fries from McDonald's. I'm not in
school yet, but I'll be in September when I'm three. Now I go to a
playgroup every Wednesday morning. I just came back today. My favorite
thing to do ... let me think... got to be visiting McDonald's after the
playgroup. Too many things are my favorite, and I can only think of
    what's for today....

These are some of the Web sites my parents found out [on China and Hong Kong],
and you can visit them and get much information:

China Home Page from Beijing, China

    China Tour

Online World Monitor Focus on China (links to Chinese education,
    culture and more)

Dartmouth University Language Resource Center China Page

    Infolink Guide to Hong Kong

    Hong Kong Terminal

    Hong Kong Online Guide
