    Anoymous from Somewhere says:

Have you tried to read this page, or your home page? The colours
you have chosen make it impossible to read the text. Thought you would like to
know so you can correct this.

Shuen Shuen notes: Yes, that's quite possible with many of the pages. I read
about the optimal contrast and relationships between print colors and background
colors from a variety of places. It's certainly not a simple task for amateur
Web publishers like myself. I'm learning a lot. Check out our more recent
home pages. There should be some improvements. One of these days, I'll also
implement the new tips in our older home pages. (I couldn't reply to this visitor
as no reply-to email address was given. Ariel and I thank this visitor for the kind
    crticism.)

Ariel replies to Linsdsay Honaker from USA:

Thanks for writing. My mom and dad were the ones who actually made my home
pages. They say it's fun. You do need to put in some time though. You have to use
a simple programming language called HTML. Actually not really programming,
but more like word processing and desktop publishing. You use some standard
commands to control the appearance, position, and sizes of the text and images
in your home page. I wonder how old you are and if you can get some help from
your parents and teachers. Let me know if you have more questions when you
actually start building your home page.

Shuen Shuen replies to Bill Turner from UK:

Thanks for your report. I've used Netscape 2.0 b1 to browse at Ariel's home
pages already. The pages loaded fine. But 2.0b1 was unstable in other
browsing functions (it wiped out my bookmarks once) so I've stopped using
it. But I'll load 2.0b3 and take a look. And if it OK, I'll recommend people to
use that. Otherwise, we just have to wait till 2.0 is formally released.

I am using Netscape Navigator 2.0 beta 3 (16bit version) under Windows
    95. When the page is loading (near the end), I get a fatal error reported
from Windows. I tried three times and Netscape crashed each time.

I guess it's probably Netscape but you may want to take a look...

[ Where can I buy the full box of Fantasia? ]

As far as I know, Disney releases old movies on video periodically and in
limited quantities. Fantasia was out a year ago in Hong Kong and they are
now sold out. Your best bet may be to check with your local video store
    for info.

    Thanks Sander.

I got the ET image from the Microsoft Cinemania '95 CD-ROM through
a screen capture. I was trying to look for ET on the Net but there seems
to be none. It's over 10 years since the movie was first shown and most
kids now don't know what ET is because there has not been merchandise
perpetuating its popularity. (You can probably still get stuffed toys of ET
if you get to the source - visit Hollywood Studio.)

I'm not sure what you need to do with an icon of ET. But feel free to
download the image from my page, and improvise. Let me know if you

Shuen Shuen replies to Swing from Frankfurt, Germany:

Thanks for your message and interest in Steam in China. As far as I know
at this moment, not much on this topic (China's railroads, trains, steam
engines) is available on the Internet. The article "Full Steam Ahead" excerpted
from a local newspaper in Hong Kong was uploaded as a related topic to my
daughter's fun home page on Thomas the Tank Engine (a children's TV series).
I am no railroading fan nor locomotive engineer myself. I haven't done any
    research on steam engines before.

I think the best resources are still the library and latest newspaper or magazine
articles and specific books or government publications on Chinese railroads
and engines. I recall seeing an English language book on Steam Engines in
China, full of photos, but not very well printed, supposedly done by a
photographer traveling on the railroads in China, at a local bookstore. That
was two or three years ago when I have no interest in railroading things,
    adult or children's. It's a coffee table book, but I can't remember the book's
title now. You might also want to try Compuserve and other online info services.

On the Internet, you can try the Time-Warner's Pathfinder Search (web address:
    http://pathfinder.com/@@SYnnHlH5dQEAQHZF/cgi-bin/taos_mf.pl?unix). This is a very
fast search engine to dig up any relevant information from their magazines,
which include TIME, Asiaweek, as well as some non-Time-Warner publications.
I'm not sure if any recent articles have featured Steam in China specifically; it
doesn't seem to be a very sensational topic, nostalgic but not of contemporary
    interest to most western readers.

One other Internet news services you might try is China News Services, at:
    http://www.chinanews.com/cns/

Shuen Shuen replies to Fraser from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada:

[ Very nice page! Could you please tell me where you got the
    fantasia pictures? ]

I got the one and only one picture of Mickey Mouse in the movie as the Sorcerer's
apprentice standing on the top of the mountain from the Microsoft CD-ROM
Cinemania '95. Resolution is not the best, but good enough for Ariel's home
page. Copyright of course goes to Walt Disney, as Microsoft acknowledges.

[ I am looking for some so that I can paint them on our baby's bedroom walls. ]

That's the only one picture from Fantasia that I can find. I heard Disney is
putting out a new feature sequel to Fantasia and would include some of the music
in the original Fantasia. I haven't checked to see if some Disney fans on the
Internet have already got some preliminary shots of characters used in the new,
and old, versions. Maybe posting to newsgroups such as rec.arts.disney for help?

[ I need them to be in electronic format so that I can put them on the wall using
     a sayette. ]

If you like the Mickey picture on Ariel's home page, just download it. The
original Microsoft picture has been cropped for the home page. So if you don't
have the CD-ROM, let me know, I can get the original larger format picture
    from the CD-ROM for you.

Oh, what's a sayette? I couldn't even find the word in my dictionary.

Let me know if you need more help.

Shuen Shuen replies to Dan from Marion IL, USA:

[ I really like your homepage. I love the Disney movies. I have a question.
I am still rather new to the internet. I was wondering if you could explain
to me how set up my own home page. ]

A home page is set up using a set of so called HTML languages (HTML stands
for HyperText Markup Language). Are you familiar with Yahoo, or
WebCrawler, or Lycos? Use any of these Web home page search engines to
go to How-To pages on writing up HTML home pages. Use the keywords
like "HTML", "Introduction", "Beginner", "Guide" in your search. A great
place to start is the GNN Netizens (URL address at: http://gnn.com/gnn/netizens/ ).
They have a template for a simple personal home page.

The basic HTML languages allow you to put together a text file for your home
page, and if you have graphics to show along with the text, you can use HTML
to define its position and size. Graphics are separate files which the home page
text file will call upon to display on demand.

The next step is to transfer (upload) the text file and any associated graphics
files to your Internet service provider. You may need to talk to them to see
where you should put them. You will also check out with your provider what
the URL (Universal Resource Locator) or the official Web address for your
home page should be. Tell your friends and publicize it on Web directory and
registry services (Lycos, WebCrawler, etc.). Let me know too so I can go
    visit. Eureka!

[ Also, how do I set up a message book? ]

A message book is set up using what are called Forms. Your visitor fills in
information in boxes and your service provider processes it for you, giving
you a summary in preset format. You can use Forms supported by your
provider, or use a public message book service (try Anyone's GuestBook at
    http://www.lpage.com:80/wguestbk/ ).

    You'll have great fun.

I think there is some real funny stuff going on here. I tried the pages as
soon as I read your message and Netscape did some mighty weird things.
However, right now the pages come up MUCH faster than they ever had. The High
Five Awards Page just got a new domain, and the link on my page is current.
All his other pages are in the same places as they always were, so I have no
clue why they behaved like they did. Possibly he is doing some "in home"
network stuff. At any rate, I will let him know, and if he has an explanation
I will definitely send it your way. Currently the pages are up and going, so
move quickly and keep your fingers crossed!

[ You've positioned yourself as the first page in a "singer, wanted"
    search. ]

Thanks for your email. I never imagine my kid's home page will appear first
in a search result list using "singer, wanted" as the key words.

I browsed through her home page and I understood why. I've recorded some
of her singing on another page but provided a link from the home page with
the heading "Budding Singer" (my kid is only 3). The word "wanted" or
"want" is a common word which appears in the text of the home page several
times. But nowhere are the two words singer, wanted (or want) being used
together in the context of your search criteria. The search engines can perform
keyword searches with ranking by the frequency of occurrence but the searches
are not really context sensitive yet.

I even tried the search engines which netcom recommends:

    1. Result for Infoseek at:

    http://www2.infoseek.com/IS/Titles?qt=singers+wanted

    (appeared as 5th on list)

    2. Result for Lycos at:

    http://query6.lycos.cs.cmu.edu/cgi-bin/pursuit?query=singers+wanted

(no appearance of my kid's home page among the first 10 in the result
list - up to their Sept 21 records)

    3. With Webcrawler, no appearance either.

So I wonder which search tool you've used to get my kid's listing to appear in
first position. I'm amazed, and flattered. I certainly won't mind my daughter
sings well and more important, enjoys singing when she gets older. And I
certainly respect all singers who enjoy singing and those who sing for a living.

I sincerely wish you locate some leads to what you are looking for.

for use yet. They are concerned about security.

As I just use the forms for visitors to leave messages, there is not much
security concern there. And people like yourself can just fill in
messages for me without having to go to a email program.

For commercial transactions, I do think security of information is a
concern of the customer. So I'm not sure if the public gateway approach
    is suitable.

I can see from your source code that Ariel's messages are posted to a

that you need to subscribe to?

I appreciate very much if you will take time to reply me.

Thank you very very much for your help.
I've found SoundHack and it did work well.
The URL you gave me was really helpful.

I think I can clean up the music page soon.

    Thanks again!!

    Perry replies to S.:

I've used SoundMachine on my PowerMac to do both Ariel's recording and
playing back of sounds from the global Internet Web pages. Most sound
files are in .au formats out there, which happens to be a UNIX sound
format. So people using SunOS, Solaris, and other UNIX browsers should
find it natural to interpret .au files. Even though PC and Mac browsers
are definitely used by the majority of Web surfers, they rely on helper
applications that can interpret .au formatted sound files, which is more
akin to the UNIX origin of the Internet and serves as a defacto standard
for Internet sound files these days.

SoundMachine is one Macintosh application that plays back .au files. The
sound format native to Mac are .snd (seldom come across on the Internet)
and .aiff, which is one of what you got. .wav format is the Wintel
    (Windows/Intel) world's standard.

    SoundMachine is at:

         ftp://mirrors.aol.com/pub/info-mac/snd/util/sound-machine-21.hqx

I've also used another shareware called SoundApp on the Mac to playback
.wav from the Internet. It's probably the most versatile playback Mac
sound tool and does many sound format conversions. However, it does not do
recording and convert sounds to .au format (at least not obvious to me so
    far).

    SoundApp is at:

         ftp://mirrors.aol.com/pub/info-mac/snd/util/sound-app-151.hqx

One good resource ... for sounds on Mac is Kyle Johnson's dedicated
Mac site, Publishing Sound on the Web:

         http://www.duke.edu/~pkscout/products/sound.html

Johnson's page has links to Sound Hack and Brian's Sound
Tool which I've heard are popular for editing sound and converting
formats. But I haven't tried them out myself extensively. SoundHack is
the tool I would use to convert non .au files to .au files. (Takes a
little trick: open the file to be converted, then save as copy; then in
the dialog box, select Next.Sun as file type and ulaw as format; then
give the new file name the .au extension.)

I'm certainly not an expert on Mac sounds. But I've made recordings with
SoundMachine and play back with SoundMachine and SoundApp, and convert
.wav to .au with Sound Hack so far. These seem to serve my purpose as
well as what you need now. So, my pleasure to share with you my
experience. Let me know if you run into any problem.

I'd like to ask you a question about converting sound files to au.
    Which application do you use?
I have two [files]: one is aiff, and the other is wav.
I heard au is the best choice for both PC and mac users, so I'm now looking
    for the tools for Mac.

You asked about the home page backgrounds. Check out Netscape's The
    Background Sampler at:
    http://home.mcom.com/home/bg/backgrounds.html

We used several "paper texture" backgrounds from Netscape for Ariel's
page. They are in the public domain, so feel free to use, as they say.

The particular light blue background on Ariel's home page (with raining
streaks) is obtained from MIT's [KPT Backgrounds Archive], at:

You may want to check out Texture Land at:

Thank you for the information [on RealAudio].

The Macintosh and Unix versions are not yet available right now, so I will

Netscape 2.0 will have in-lined sounds and movies as an insider said, but I
did not know how. RealAudio is the solution! Hope we can browse the web
    with it soon.

Have you looked at RealAudio, the supposedly audio

too? I haven't tried it out yet. Here's the url:

Check it out! One of Ariel's friend (age 6) was on Kids' Space recently
and complained that the pictures and sounds are so slow to
come out! The just-can't-wait generation, I suppose....

Kids' Space replies to Perry's Questions on GIF images:
The transparent gif can be created by a program called Transparency.
This is for Mac, but there is one for PC/Windows.

You can check ftp://www2.englib.cornell.edu/pub/mac-software/ or other
Universities' ftp if Cornell does not have it.

    Perry asks Kids' Space:
A question: I see that the icons you use in the Kids' Space home page
fall on the background/background color nicely (borderless). My GIF images
often have a square border so the drawing is set in this square white
background and then set into the specified home page
background/background color. Any quick answer to how I can process my
images to adopt a "transparent" background to take up the specified one
in the home page when called upon?
