The Surface Interval

Delaneys The Surface Interval is the Club's monthly social get together. The venue changes from month to month and usually aims to provide those who come along with something good to eat though presentations and films are also possibilities. We meet one Friday (usually) of every month but for the actual date of the next gathering check out the calendar. This is an opportunity to meet up with other members of the Club and also to introduce and get to know newcomers; it's also a great time to renew your membership. Keep an eye on the calendar for other non-diving events such as hiking, kayaking and quiz nights!

Next interval is set for 7pm Thursday March 31st at the Blck Brd, 6th Floor & Roof Garden, No. 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, HK. You are most welcome to come and join us for a drink and a chat.

Fish are Friends: We're off to get educated on Wednesday 16th of Feb courtesy of the Royal Geographical Society lecture " From Reef to Restaurant" featuring Prof. Yvonne Sadovy.

Most Hong Kong residents enjoy seafood but few know where the fish they enjoy comes from or how it is caught. In particular, few know how their taste for fish affects coral reefs and the fishing communities that depend on healthy coral reef ecosystems. Prof. Sadovy's talk explores the impacts of Hong Kong on coral reefs and coastal communities often thousands of miles away, the work being done to make those links more sustainable and how seafood consumers can help. She also explores whether mariculture (fish farming) can help solve these problems and the truth about marine protected areas, exposing some of the hidden costs of feeding Hong Kong 's ever growing appetite for luxury seafood.

Will undoubtedly provide food for thought for those of us who profess a love of the oceans yet still harbour a passion for seafood. I shall endeavor to write up a review after the event.

Return of the SI: Thursday 10th February saw a revival of the much neglected Surface Interval at the Blck Brd on Lyndhurst Terrace. Many thanks to Denvy for organising and for all who came, particularly Barbara and Andrew who are interested in joining the Hong Kong scuba scene. We'll be back at the Blck Brd at the end of March.

When's the AGM?: The club Annual General Meeting will soon be upon us.

It's always quite a casual do with elections and officer reports kept brief and to the point. Dinner on the other hand is a much more leisurely affair and hopefully members new and old will take the time to drop by and catch up.

This year the event will be held upstairs at McSorley's Ale House on Elgin St, SoHo. Date to be confirmed. Please RSVP to the club secretary, Denvy, so that she can keep the restaurant appraised of numbers.

I for one will be bringing my camera so that we can get some new pics on this website - if I can remember!
